Modular structures for the Geneva Island Art Space Biennale (BIG)
- Year: 2023
- Location: Geneva (CH)
For the Geneva Island Art Space Biennale (BIG), Constructlab designed and built structures to host 89 Geneva-based art collectives. The project took place over three weeks on the shores of Lake Geneva, offering an exceptional setting with views of Mont Blanc.
Extending from the Museum of the History of Science, four large lake structures form a series of modular spaces. They are complemented by a footbridge that creates a direct link between the park and the lake. Built from scaffolding and cheese pallet flooring, these structures emphasise reuse and constructive sobriety.
The simplicity of these “palafittes” leaves plenty of room for the artistic collectives that occupy them, both inside and out. Designed as living machinery, they evolve according to the uses and personalities that inhabit them. Each façade is composed of three elements that can be opened horizontally, allowing the structure to transform and adapt to the needs of the groups, in tune with the collective dynamics of the biennial.
