Transformation for a socio-cultural association within a psychiatric hospital

  • Year: 2023 -
  • Location: Monthey (CH)

The Malévoz Cultural Quarter is coming to life in the former hospital unit dating from 1917, which has now been renovated to host cultural, social and artistic activities. This transformation work supports the development of the Malévoz Cultural Quarter association, which is gradually taking over this space vacated by the hospital.

The building now houses an artist's residence with a dozen rooms, a little shop, a lab for processing garden produce, a refreshment bar with a terrace shaded by chestnut trees, and offices for the association's staff. New workshop and exhibition spaces, a library, and additional rooms and offices complete the site to better respond to the growing needs of the artists and projects supported by the association.  The work is being carried out in phases to ensure that the living and working spaces can continue to be used. This long-term process aims to ensure flexibility and adaptability, to support the group's future changes and provide occupants with the infrastructure they need to successfully carry out their projects.

The architectural intervention is both delicate and radical, revealed as a series of elements added or removed with precision. The dismantling of certain structures allows for the opening up of spaces, increasing ceiling heights and exposing the raw structures. The new elements built differ from the existing ones in their shape and materiality: cement block walls, solid spruce furniture and skirting boards, and flooring made from rubber granules mixed with chestnut from the domain. The overall design is largely inspired by photographic archives found on the site. Thus, glazed earthenware, mirrors, glass blocks and illuminated globes have made a reappearance. Radiators, sanitary equipment and other useful elements have been reused, in line with a conscious approach to circularity. The red colour applied to the skirting boards and metal elements also draws on the historical identity of the place.

At the crossroads of social work, culture and heritage, the Quartier Culturel de Malévoz aims to be a welcoming oasis. It is intended in particular for people experiencing temporary or long-term difficulties, through integration spaces linked to social and/or socio-professional integration. At the entrance to the site, greenhouses and horticultural beds form the core of the Cultural Garden. Flowers, vegetables, berries and other plants are cultivated using permaculture methods that take care of the soil, microfauna and biodiversity. Once harvested, the produce is processed in the new laboratory, giving rise to unique creations that reflect natural rhythms and seasons.
